A heavy yet hopeful heart for our girls

So many women struggle with demands for perfection. My heart is heavy this morning thinking about a young twenty something girl I know who is having breast enhancement surgery today. Sadly, she must feel that she is not “perfect” enough or pretty enough. She desires to look different so that she will be more accepted, perhaps. I am praying for her to come through her surgery safely and to know that God loves her so much—just as she is.

Recently on one of my Catholic Mom’s Cafe segments I said:

Down through the ages women have been forced to grapple with cultural issues. Today’s issues in many respects seem far more challenging. We can get entangled in the culture without realizing it or recognizing its dangers. The false life portrayed on billboards, sung in popular music, watched on reality TV, and transmitted all over social media can begin to seem real. We can become like zombies to technology, obsessed with gathering information, so preoccupied with the news that we totally miss out on living our present moments of life.

At every turn, women are barraged with demands for perfection in all areas of their lives. Ironically, women who struggle to achieve some crazy level of perfection can find themselves feeling less and less adequate. They buy into the world’s notions about worth and struggle to keep up with what society expects of them rather than heed what their hearts tell them. They worry about everything from their appearance to their place in society, often leaving their children to the care of others to prove their worth to the world. They join endless committees or spend small fortunes on their appearance and the décor of their homes, only to end up in the therapist’s office wondering why they aren’t happy and why they aren’t perfect.

Women often struggle due to countless temptations they feel they need to pursue such as the alluring, but false promises of our ungodly culture. On the other hand, they can feel exhausted from the strenuous battle to prevent the dangerous and damaging cultural influences from affecting or harming them and their families.

In my book Embracing Motherhood I said:

The simple fact that we are women subjects us to a myriad of expectations from our culture, perhaps even from our families and peers. Unless we are hermits, the constant visuals and chatter of demands are all around us. The advertising world, for example, entices us to try this cream for a wrinkle-free complexion, this makeup for just the right glow, this diet product or exercise plan to be a size zero—can there be such a thing?

Our goal as Christian women is to love and serve God, not ourselves or our culture. So let’s take a look at some of the expectations we face on a daily basis and explore what we can do about them.

Beginning With Girls

I want to look first at the societal pressures on young women, because I believe that this is where the demands for perfection start. As we recognize this, we can strive to make a positive difference in the lives of young girls, confront any unrealistic expectations we internalized in our own youth, and turn our attention toward God’s will for our lives.

Young girls are subject to incredible demands these days from our culture. We may naively believe—or maybe it’s wishful thinking—that our innocent girls are too young to be affected by this onslaught. The truth is, however, that they keenly feel pressure from many sources, including school, their peers, and society. As parents, grandparents, aunts, and friends, we should recognize and try to address the difficulties our girls face and help guide them safely into womanhood.

The impact of the insidious pressure on young girls hit home for me recently, when some friends had to send their teenage daughter to a rehabilitation center to be treated for anorexia and drug abuse. Apparently no one saw this coming, which is sadly not rare. A sweet young girl from a churchgoing family couldn’t deal with demands coming from her peers, who portrayed a more appealing and exciting life-style. These girls taught her how to cleverly hide telltale signs from her parents. She barely escaped death, she later confessed. More than a year later, she was able to return to her high school, where unfortunately she may again be subjected to such pressures.

Everyday life for a teenager is tough enough, having to struggle with hormonal mood swings—one minute exhilarated and the next minute immersed in a major trauma—acne, worry about boys, feeling that their parents just don’t understand, and academic pressures. But today our culture tops it all off with crazy expectations that can be overwhelming. Sometimes life seems like a pressure cooker to these girls, who should be experiencing a positive and happy childhood instead.

Statistics show that girls are three times more likely than boys to have a negative body image. Young girls are vulnerable, for they take criticisms personally and deeply. Feeling intimidated by the “in crowd,” they may honestly think that they are fat or ugly. They might deal with bullies and kids who talk about them behind their backs.

It’s impossible for us to miss the standardized body image for girls plastered all over the mass media—from Hollywood, the runway, television, and glossy magazines. Young girls are brainwashed into believing that being a particular clothes size will bring them happiness and solve all of their problems. Most adolescents are unaware that what is projected to them as desirable is impossible to achieve anyway. The airbrushing used in the industry distorts a young girl’s perception of what standard of physical beauty is attainable.

There are other pressures on teens and “tweens” of both sexes. Consider their exposure to pop stars, professional athletes, and other celebrities who glamorize drug abuse and underage drinking. It’s pretty scary to think that these celebrities masquerade as role models for children today.

What to Do?

What can parents do?

First of all, the focus needs to be on a girl’s real beauty—her talents, her mind, her heart, her spirit, as well as her natural grace and physique. Parents should start early to build self-esteem in their girls, to enable them to resist the battering of pressures as they grow. We should continue to show our affection even as they pull away during the adolescent years. We can respect their occasional need for solitude while welcoming and encouraging their participation in family activities and dinners.

A girl who feels loved by her parents and good about herself will still feel the pressures from our culture but will be better equipped to deal with them. Love is powerful. But one study revealed that a mere 32 percent of girls felt loved by their parents. We should find this alarming.

The best role models for kids are their parents. Our example speaks volumes. Our children look up to us and learn our behaviors. Prayers at the dinner table are not only wonderful but essential. They set a valuable family tradition and foster family values, as do get-togethers with relatives.

There’s nothing like supportive girlfriends to help ease the trials and tribulations of teenagerhood. Parents can steer their daughters away from cliques and toward wholesome friends. We can keep a close watch on our girls’ activities and peer groups by encouraging get-togethers at our own homes, where we can have some control. We need to know who they arehanging out with. We can usually sense when something is not right. We have to trust our gut as parents and then act.

I’ve watched my three daughters grow up and have been cognizant of their choices of friends. I have enjoyed watching their interactions and hearing their lighthearted giggles during discussions of school and other activities. Taking an active role and interest in their lives has allowed me to discover what’s going on and be connected lovingly, even when they are away at college. I’ve done this with my two sons as well.

Teaching our girls not to worry about what others are saying and encouraging them to be confident in their own shoes is key. If we can reinforce this while they are very young, we’re providing a solid and strong footing for them.

Very clear and consistent boundaries give kids parameters, establishing a safety net and helping them make wise choices. They actually want these guidelines, despite their attempts to rebel against them at times. Kids can even use their parents’ rules as excuses to not get involved in potentially dangerous situations with their peers. It’s a safe way out of trouble and one that parents can suggest their children use.

Our continual open communication and encouragement will reassure our daughters, nieces, and granddaughters that they can come to us with their troubles and their joys. We may discover opportunities for open communication while out on a walk, driving in the car, or participating in an activity with them. They may be more likely to open up in such situations rather than in face-to-face encounters, which can be awkward. Prayer and inspiration from the Holy Spirit will unveil opportunities for this.

To get them through these years safely, we absolutely have to show young girls our love in affectionate, understanding, and tangible ways and be there for them—always! We need to be examples of how to live in this world without being subject to its demands (see John 17:11–19). We must learn the way to the Father and show them the way!

We don’t have all of the answers—that is for sure. But, it is helpful to consider who will influence our decisions and who our role models should be. I suggest we all strive to imitate Mother Mary in her holy femininity.

Let’s ponder Blessed John Paul II’s words, “Woman can only find herself by giving love to others.” Let’s ask our Lord to help us unearth the beauty and richness of our femininity and our feminine genius so that we can be open to His love and be able to courageously pass it on to our families and communities.

Life is filled to the brim with challenges and our culture certainly does not make it easy for women. Let’s be encouraging to all those young women in our lives and let them know how beautiful they really are!

Meanwhile, I leave you with words to ponder from Saint John, “For all that is in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches—comes not from the Father but from the world. And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live forever” (1 John 2:16-18).

A “sweaty” update!

My post from Face book:

When someone starts talking about their sweat on social media they are either losing it or their life is an open book…

The past four nights have been interesting. I woke up each night totally drenched in a night sweat. I feel like I have been in a battle. One night it happened twice! I have sweated so much that I lost over 4 pounds in 4 days and that is with my trying very hard to replenish with fluids. I talked to my doctor last night to go over a few things and asked him abut the night sweats. He was very pleased that the medicine brought them on. I asked if I was getting rid of the dead bacteria through my perspiration. He said that it was absolutely happening. He said a major battle was being waged within me and the Babisia was being attacked big time. The other two tick-borne diseases and the walking pneumonia are being attacked too. But, the Babisia was the first one (based on the med. I started with). So, last night I blessed myself with an extra dose of holy water before I went to sleep to enter the battlefield again.

Today is a new day. Graces abound and Our Lord wants us to ask for them and to accept them use them. Thank you for your prayers! You are definitely in mine. God bless you and keep you!

Health update

I posted this update on face book today:

I don’t like to draw attention to myself. Initially, I wasn’t going to share on social media about my debilitating illnesses, but many have asked and I decided I should tell you so I can ask for your prayers. And boy, am I overwhelmed by your generosity of prayers. It warms my heart. In addition, I am hoping that by sharing it could help others.
My fevers continue. But I am SO thankful that my fever came down yesterday. During the night and this morning it wasn’t as high as it has been for the past couple of weeks. And for the first time in a couple of weeks my heart wasn’t racing uncontrollably last night and this morning.
But the fever has continued along with the intense pain, burning feeling in my skin, heart problems, weakness, cough, lack of balance, sheer exhaustion, cramping muscles, joint pain, and more.
I’m realizing I’ve had the walking pneumonia for quite some time (based on blood work and symptoms). But I just chugged along pushing through because I didn’t have health insurance. My insurance had doubled in cost due to the “lovely” change from “Uncle Sam.” So, I lost the insurance.
And as for the tick borne diseases– I’ve been dealing with them for years–all new cases from new tick bites. I’ve been fighting for treatment due to ignorance and being misdiagnosed several times. I had to point things out to my doctors, disagree with their misdiagnosis of autoimmune diseases, etc. The blood work finally proved that I was right in several cases. I’m pointing this out to encourage others to fight for their appropriate health care. Do your research. Please don’t simply accept a diagnosis. And be aware that blood tests for Lyme and tick borne diseases may not show your positive diagnosis at first.

I’ve made the mistake in the past of trusting the test and then doubting myself thinking I must not have it then because this test says I don’t. Take care of yourself. Eat healthy and get exercise if you can. Protect yourself from ticks! I feel for the elderly and the very ill who just don’t know how or don’t have strength to stand up for themselves or question treatment.
One doctor was convinced I had Lupis and wanted to put me on a medicine that would slow down my immune system so the supposed autoimmune disease would stop attacking my joints. She based her “diagnosis” on my very high ANA count. I told her that I wouldn’t go on a medication that will slow down my immune system. I actually asked her, “Why would I want to go on that and slow down my immune system when I need it to fight this Lyme disease for which you are treating me? And don’t you think my ANA could be high because I am fighting Lyme? Is that possible?” She still thought I had Lupis. I said, “Let’s wait a month or a bit more and recheck my blood then. I bet the ANA will go down when my Lyme is treated.”
Well, guess what happened after I was rechecked? The doctor called me up and said, “You were right!” She was nice. I had another experience in which a PA was actually hostile toward me because I told her I thought I had Lyme (and I did!). And she refused to treat me. Unfortunately, the doctor from that office was away for a couple of days and I was stuck with this PA. I told her that I do not abuse antibiotics. In fact, I do not like to take them. But, I needed the antibiotic to get rid of the Lyme disease, I told her. I knew that the disease had progressed because I was experiencing some of the exact symptoms I had in the past when it had gotten out of control. This PA did not want to treat the WHOLE person.

She did not take any of my symptoms into consideration. She wanted to base her diagnosis on clinical (blood work) only. That is not what a good doctor or PA should do.

Anyway, what happened is that I ended up practically begging her to please prescribe the Doxycycline because I was convinced it would get even worse if I didn’t get on the medicine. She finally agreed to do so only IF I agreed to do another blood test. I said “GLADLY!” The next day her office called (she had the secretary tell me) and I was told that the blood test was POSITIVE for Lyme and that I should continue taking the antibiotic that the PA had prescribed. I thanked the woman and bit my tongue because I wanted to say, “You mean the medicine that I begged her to give me, the medicine she at first refused to give me?” But, what good would that have done? In addition, I was now on the antibiotic and I knew I was NOT going back to that office again.
Thankfully, I have just found a Lyme literate doctor who was recommended to me.
The three tick-borne diseases I am fighting now–Lyme, Babisia, and Q Fever are new cases from new tick bites. I have been dealing with tick-borne diseases for over 20 years.
For those who might not know, some ticks are only the size of a poppy seed and you can’t always see them on your skin. You usually notice after the area starts hurting from the bite and it’s usually too late then. The darn tick has done its damage and infected your body with disease which will attack every system of the body, wreaking havoc and causing serious harm. The longer you are made to wait for treatment (and this has happened to me due to blood tests that are not always accurate), the more devastating the damage to vital organs and systems.
I am going to start using an organic bug spray before I go outside. I don’t use poisons. Hopefully, I can ward off the ticks this way.
This update is by no means meant as a complaint about my situation. I am praying throughout these illnesses and offering it all to God. I believe that Our Lord can use our suffering in big ways, making it redemptive when we offer it lovingly to Him.
Though these symptoms continue, I am very hopeful. I see improvement in that my fever isn’t as high (right now) and I still have much more medicine to take. Each day, I pray will bring me closer to having all of this behind me and having strength again.
I am deeply thankful for your love, concern, and your many prayers. May God reward you!
I am hoping that I will get strong enough to travel to New Jersey the week of the 21st to present at the CMN that week. I believe that is very possible. With your prayers, it is.
This is turning into a book! But I thought I should fill you in.
God bless you and keep you. Thank you again. Please be assured that I am praying for you! ❤
PS In my last couple of posts I read your beautiful comments as I could, but believe it or not, I was too weak to click “like” on all of them. If I don’t “like” your beautiful comment it doesn’t mean I didn’t read it or that I don’t care. Believe me when I tell you that your comments and prayers warm my heart. And, I am praying hard for all of you.

Struggling with Lyme and tick-borne diseases

I recently posted the following message to my Face Book friends. I thought I should fill you in too so you’ll know why I haven’t been active with blogging lately…

medicine

I’m writing from my sick bed. Because you have been praying for me and checking on me I think you deserve an update. In a nutshell, I’m very sick. I’ve been running high fevers, chills, and have intense pain all over my body especially in my head. I have been offering it to God for His holy will. He is the Divine Physician and knows just what we need. I was in bed most of all last week due to the high fevers, chills, and pain. I was hoping that the fevers had subsided, (but knew I needed to get to the doctor due to the lingering severe pain), but the high fever came back last night and this morning along with the heart racing and more intense pain. Thankfully, I saw a very good Lyme disease doctor this morning. He pointed out the three tickborne diseases that I have according to my blood work that are very bad and very active and are wreaking havoc on my body. I also have some sort of bacterial pneumonia. That was a surprise! I will start my treatment tonight. I will be taking three different kinds of very strong antibiotics along with probiotics. Please pray that the medicine will work and that I won’t have any reactions to it (I have had severe reactions to some meds in the past). Sometimes the tick-borne diseases get much worse (after starting the strong meds.) before they get better. I really need to get all of this terrible stuff (bacteria) out of my body. I have been dealing with it for many many years. It can be very debilitating. Right now I’m at an awful state. But I’m very hopeful and very thankful to have visited with that doctor today. I also received the anointing of the sick recently. So, thank you so much dear friends. I am deeply grateful for your concern and your many prayers. I really need the prayers. God bless you. I’m praying for you too. ❤

I am hoping and praying that the medicine kicks in and does its work so that I can travel to New Jersey to the upcoming Catholic Marketing Network Trade Show coming up in less than two weeks! There I will moderate a couple of panels for the Catholic Writer’s Guild and give a talk for the Ignatius Press audience, which will, in a sense, debut my upcoming memoir: The Kiss of Jesus: How Mother Teresa and the Saints Helped Me To Discover the Beauty of the Cross. I will be signing advance reader copies of my book, Lord willing. The official release for my memoir will be in August.

The Incredible Blessing of Grand-motherhood!

I recently became a Grandmother for the very first time. It is such an awesome blessing! I recently took a few moments to attempt to express my joy.

The Sacredness and Hidden Blessings in Christian Marriage

weddingJune is a time of bountiful “I do’s.” I was a June bride, therefore I will be celebrating my wedding anniversary in the coming days with my husband Dave. When asked to write a piece for Magnificat magazine under the category of “She Pondered These Things In Her Heart” and knowing it would be about marriage and family, I decided to convey something very real–not just a warm and fuzzy kind of love story.

I wanted to be honest in my article, brutally honest. Real love doesn’t translate to bliss or “warm and fuzzy.” Sure we enjoy those moments, but indeed marriage overall requires our work. And, love hurts sometimes. Mother Teresa often professed that real love requires sacrifice and often hurts. As well,  we can’t rely on our feelings to forge ahead in our marriages. We choose to love–to give–to surrender our hearts.

Unexpected_Discovery2

I titled my piece, “Unexpected Discovery” because I think that is what discovery often is–unexpected. We can discover something we never realized about ourselves or about our spouse as we go through the daily grind–the nitty gritty details of life where we are supposed to be working out our salvation. We can also decide to work on getting rid of a vice as well as work towards cultivating a particular virtue once we open our hearts to discovery and God’s amazing grace.

In my piece for Magnificat which is in the June 2015 issue, I recalled a sort of funny, but what started out as a bit of a frustrating experience with my dear husband. The challenge that was presented in writing it (especially for me because I love to tell stories–long stories!) was to say it in a very limited number of words (and spaces!) because an exact amount of space is calculated and permitted in which to express the message so that it will fit on to the small Magnificat page. But, no more than that–not even one additional word or space.

Unexpected_Discovery1

Hopefully my message about sacrificial and sacramental love in marriage and family comes through. Hopefully I have expressed it in the little story I have shared. One woman who read the piece told me that she is going to put the page in a pretty photo frame and gift it to her daughter and soon-to-be son-in-law who are about to be married.

I think that is a beautiful and creative gift!

Unexpected_Discovery3

May God bless all marriages everywhere in which spouses bound in their sacramental covenant are actually actively helping one another to get to heaven through thick and thin, in good times and bad, and throughout every single detail they share every ordinary day!

May I ask? Have you discovered something very unexpected while navigating the vocation of marriage with your spouse? Will you seek to discover a hidden blessing waiting to be unearthed? Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

My participation in this upcoming book: “Family, the Church, and the Real World”

Family life is both messy and holy. I’m sure you’ll agree. I am happy to report that I have written a portion of a new book for families titled, Family, the Church, and the Real World due to be released on August 1st in time for the World Meeting of Families.

My contribution is about the “Domestic Church.”

826207

A description from Liguori:

If you embrace only the holiness, or if you just get lost in the messiness, then you miss the fullness of the experience that is living as a family – both in the domestic church and the Institutional Church. Here you’ll find inspiration from Scripture and modern advice that does more than just tell you how family life is “supposed” to be. This book gives you real, practical wisdom on how to navigate the holy messiness of family life.

Insights have been gathered from experts in every area of family life, including: Dr. Sean Reynolds, Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak, Lisa Hendey, Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, Dr. Don Paglia, Christopher West, Fr. Andrew Wisdom, Dr. Tom Neal, and Greg and Jennifer Willits. You’ll discover that Catholic Church teaching on marriage and family is rooted in our ultimate calling – to love with all we can muster, even through those messy moments.

Here’s a link to the book’s description and other details at the publisher.

You can pre-order the book (which sells for $15.00) at my website here.

May God bless families everywhere!

SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE

Guess what I watched last night? I got a FULL sneak peek at the upcoming television movie: SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE!

I love the Signed, Sealed, Delivered television series. I watch very little television other than EWTN shows, but this is one show I enjoy very much. This upcoming movie is an expansion of the series.

Series Creator and Executive Producer Martha Williamson has written a love letter to fans of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL and SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED in her new television movie SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE, a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Original World Premiere Saturday, June 6 at 9pm ET/PT, 8C

By the way, here’s a quick sneak peek: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RgHcg51QOI

The film’s writer/producer, Martha Williamson is the pioneer of the modern-day resurgence of faith-based movies and TV through her groundbreaking work on TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL.

The movie is an expansion of the one-hour series originally aired on Hallmark Channel and features Williamson’s signature style – wholesome, thought-provoking entertainment spotlighting stories about making the world a kinder and better place.  Oliver O’Toole, who leads a team of “postal detectives” charged with ensuring “dead letters” find their way to their addresses,  is a man of faith whose wife has left him to pursue her dreams in Paris. In this inspirational story, his wife returns to explore the fate of their marriage on the same day Oliver’s team must deliver divorce papers to another couple grappling with the true meaning of love and the sanctity of marriage.

SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE marks the launch of the SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED movie series Williamson is currently producing for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, expanding her one-hour series that drew a passionate, loyal fan base when it originally aired on Hallmark Channel.

Williamson’s signature laugh-while-you-cry style is evident in her highly anticipated new movie SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE. Lead postal detective Oliver O’Toole is a man of faith whose wife has left him to pursue her dreams in Paris. In this inspirational story, his wife returns to explore the fate of their marriage on the same day the POstables deliver divorce papers to another couple grappling with the true meaning of love and the sanctity of marriage.

Primetime television veteran Poppy Montgomery (“Without a Trace”) guest-stars alongside returning stars Eric Mabius (“Ugly Betty”), Kristin Booth (“The Kennedys”), Crystal Lowe (“Smallville”) and Geoff Gustafson (“The Interview”) in this world premiere two-hour movie from Martha Williamson.

“At the heart of the franchise is Oliver, a modern day gentleman with old world values played brilliantly by Eric Mabius. He and his wonderful team of postal detectives will continue to make it their mission to solve mysteries behind lost letters that can change lives when they reach their intended recipients. And in SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE, the life that’s changed is Oliver’s, said Williamson.

Just for fun, if you leave a comment here you will be entered into a drawing for a vintage TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL greeting card. Here’s the official description from Martha’s team: “The beautiful CD greeting cards are part of a limited edition greeting with rare images of the Touched By An Angel cast that each contain a CD single of a song that was featured in an episode of the beloved series. They were originally sold for $5.99 each and can no longer be purchased anywhere.”

I hear there is another prize in the works so stay tuned to hear about that.

My review will be coming up. Meanwhile don’t miss this fabulous movie! I highly recommend it!

The Cross in Our Lives

There are so many reasons that Christ’s Cross should be on our minds as a Christian, especially because we are navigating the season of Lent—that beautiful and prayerful time of year. Holy Mother Church prods us to become more mindful of Jesus’ Passion and Death on the Cross—His unselfish holy sacrifice so that we might have Eternal Life…

I recently wrote about the Cross using a couple of very beautiful stories about the Cross in the lives of two friends. You can read it here.
